S85 engines have a Vanos oil pump located in the sump, gear-driven by the crankshaft. However, engines built before March 2007 had a pump drive gear which did not have perfect tooth engagement with the crank, and therefore BMW updated the Vanos sprocket to avoid failures. These can include teeth breaking off both the Vanos gear and the crankshaft gear, causing catastrophic engine failure.

This sprocket is the updated item from BMW, which cures the potential disaster of broken gears. One required per engine, precision installation required.
