One of the (unfortunately) many problems with S65 engines that has reared its head of late, is that of failing plastic VANOS covers. These covers sit over the VANOS unit’s return springs but are made of plastic. In the past this hasn’t represented a huge problem, but as the engines get older, the plastic gets more brittle and the issue is becoming more and more widespread.

When these fail, not only do the pieces of plastic fall down through the timing chain into the sump, causing blockages of the oil pump pick-up and total engine failure, but the VANOS return spring can also be let loose to cause utter havoc within the engine.

To tackle this issue, many companies have started offering aluminium versions which clip-on, like the original plastic pieces. In theory, great, however this does place the material under constant stress which can fatigue and fail; as is also being evidenced over time.

To fix the issue once and for all, we teamed up with Koflach Engine Developments to create the ultimate fix; their Billet Steel VANOS Cover Set.

These are made right here in Sussex from a specially chosen high strength steel alloy material. Though simple in appearance, the manufacturing of these to hit the tolerances KED required involved some seriously bespoke tooling, and the results speak for themselves. These were then black zinc plated for longevity and a fantastic appearance; one that we’ll admit, photos do no justice.

Rather than clipping-on, these replace the BMW washer (part no 11367840999) which sits beneath the camshaft bolt (11367840998). This fixes the cover to the VANOS unit with extreme strength, and means that installation is a simple case of following the BMW procedure, but with these covers in place of the washers. Though a little more involved to fit than the clip-on covers, the long-term benefit and peace of mind are enormous.
